***The following is a detailed recap of episode 405 of FROM, “Whaat a Long Strange Trip It's Been,” and it contains spoilers for the episode.***

At the settlement, everyone stands around staring at what has risen from the lake. Donna suggests they pull whatever it is in. Roger is skeptical and says they all should get a say. Donna responds that they need to sleep there. Even if they left now, they’d never make it back before dark. She’d feel a whole lot better knowing who or what floated to the surface. The others agree with her so they pull it in. Whatever it is, is covered in seaweed.

Elsewhere, Ethan wraps and buries the dead bird telling it he’s sorry they couldn’t save it. He really wanted it to be the Lake of Tears. He asks his mother if they will be okay, and she says she hopes so.

Meanwhile, Jade stares out the window at the motel sign which has changed and is lit up saying “this way.” He calls Boyd, telling him the mushrooms kicked in. Then he sees spiders crawling on the window glass and then over him, but Boyd snaps him out of it, as nothing is there. Boyd tells him that maybe they should go see Kristi, but he says he has to do it, but he needs Boyd to be his anchor, his guide, to tell him what is real and what isn’t. He says they need a safe word that will bring him back if things go off the rails and he chooses Capricorn then says, “Let’s go get weird.” He goes outside and walks in the direction the sign points and Boyd follows.

Sophia pretends to be scared as Kristi and Marielle set her arm. Marielle goes to the ambulance to get the brace. Julie and Randall are on the way into the clinic and Marielle comments she likes Julie’s haircut and Randall tells her it’s a long story.

When Marielle enters the ambulance, she is suddenly restrained by shackles and chains. She hears screams coming from the radio as she struggles to get free.

They uncover the life size dolls. Donna, so there are no more surprises, cuts one open down the chest. It’s full of stuffing and material. Patty questions why someone would put them in the lake. Donna says there is only one reason she can think of that people put life size dolls full of stuffing outside. Ethan guesses it: scarecrows. Donna says you put them in the field to scare the crows away and questions if the reason they are in the lake is to keep something else down there from coming out.

Meanwhile, Jade continues to hallucinate from the mushrooms and throws up. He tells Boyd they need to ask the right question. He says out loud to show him what he used to know that he can’t remember, what’s in his head that will help them leave. He hears the violin playing, but Boyd does not. He walks off and sees a young version of himself playing the violin. He gets upset and says it’s something he forgot from when he was twelve, the day his grandmother died. She asked him to play for her so he did, all day, and at some point he knew she just wasn’t in the room anymore, but he couldn’t look at her and just kept playing, because he knew when he stopped, she was really gone, so he just played and played. Jade cries and yells that isn’t what he wants to remember but why they are stuck there and how they get home. Young Jade comes up to him then he sees the man with the spike through his eye holding a skull of blood. Boyd wants an update and he tells him it’s the guy he saw nailed to the tree at the settlement, and he wants Jade to drink the blood. He keeps saying “anghkooey.” Boyd tells him to drink it and that it’s not real. Boyd says maybe he’s trying to tell him how to get answers, but his young version tells him not to drink it. He chooses to drink it. There are spiders in the skull and he spits it out. The two Jades talk in French and the boy tells him he doesn’t get to choose his memories and he’s now going to see things he doesn’t want to see. He follows the boy when he runs off.

Kenny comes in to see Fatima who is further along with her golem. He came to apologize. He should have tried to listen instead of just reacting as they are strongest when they back each other up, but he got scared and didn’t do that. She thanks him. He asks if she is still connected to that thing and what it feels like. She says it’s terrifying in a way she can’t really explain. Every night she goes to the window and looks outside knowing one of these nights she will see him standing there staring back at her. He asks what happens then, and she says she doesn’t know.

Kenny goes downstairs and finds Henry hoarding alcohol from the bar. He says he keeps a stash on hand to take the edge off and offers him some, but Kenny says he’s good.

Kristi goes out to find Marielle when she doesn’t come back. She finds her sitting in the ambulance shaking in fear and asks what's wrong. She says she just needed a minute. She tells her she’s fine when she asks but Kristi knows she is lying.

They fill the dolls with rocks. Ellis says that once in a while he stops and thinks about types of things that have become normal for them as they are packing life size dolls with rocks. Donna says to think about something else like getting back to his wife. They need to get them back in the water. Ethan asks if she really thinks there is something bad in the water, and Donna says she would rather not find out. Tabitha suddenly has a memory of dolls she had as a child. Donna, realizing something is up, asks her to help her with something. She asks what is going on and Tabitha says there is something about the dolls that is familiar. She thinks she’s seen them before. Donna asks her if there is something in the lake they need to be afraid of, but Tabitha doesn’t know. They are finished with the rocks, so they all help drag them back in the water, although not to the middle of the lake.

Jade continues to follow the boy. He questions what that means that he will see things he doesn’t want to see, but he won’t answer him. Boyd asks if he is okay and says they can stop if it’s too much and go back. Jade hears music again and follows it. He comes to Colony House and the boy is playing the violin again, but he is not the only one. On the porch are Christopher, the man with the spike through his eye, the Civil War soldier, and the guy embedded in the rock. The boy tells him that he warned him the answers he sought would come wrapped in painful truths.

Henry sits in the kitchen drinking. Henry asks what he does for fun with so much time just sitting around worrying if he is going to survive night and that he can’t forget to live. He is drunk and stumbles out into the other room to the piano. Victor says he should lie down, but instead he starts playing and singing “Leaving on a Jet Plane” and talking about playing when he was little and his mother singing. Everyone just watches not sure what to do. Kenny comes in and goes over to Henry as he starts getting upset and cries, but he yells at him and Victor. He asks Kenny if he knows what he did to his wife. Kenny tries to get him to go upstairs. Henry says he’s sorry to Victor but then starts yelling and collapses, crying.

Tabitha stares at the totems. Ethan talks to Donna. He asks her if they will be ok and she says of course. He says he doesn’t want Julie to be alone. She tells him that first thing in the morning they will get out of there. She tells him to go into the cabin. He tells her he likes it when she's' there; it’s not as scary when she’s around.

Sophia listens from the closet in secret to Julie and Randall arguing. He says they tried doing something to prove it’s real, and it didn’t work. Julie says it’s about him being scared of the ruins. He says it’s about a child that doesn't know what is in front of her face: the place is screwing with her head, because it knows she misses her father. He’s watched her have two seizures in two days literally frying her brain and asks which is more like, that she is traveling through a story or that one day she’s going to have a seizure that doesn't stop. She says she doesn't care and is willing to take that risk. He tells her she is a moron and that if her father was there, he would be stunned at how stupid she is being and that she’s only mad at him because she knows he’s right.

Sophia walks out then and listens to Marielle and Kristi arguing. Marielle questions the place has never gotten to her before where she needed a minute to freak out, and it’s not a big deal and to give it a rest. Sophia runs into her, grabbing her arm. Then Marielle is suddenly is shackled again to the wall and starts screaming. The scene changes to show her in the caves. Kristi comes over and there are in reality no shackles. She helps her.

The men stop playing the music. When Boyd asks what he sees, Jade tells him it is the people from his hallucinations, but questions why they are playing that song. The boy says, “You know why.” Jade realizes they are all versions of himself, the lives he’s lived there. Young Jade says there are many more as well and tells him to look closely and tell him what he sees. Jade, realizing, tells him that none of them are ripped apart so they weren't killed by the creatures in the woods; they were murdered. Jade asks by who and he tells him he knows the answer, then says in French, "Minnows in a shark’s net.” Jade realizes they were murdered by the people in the town. The boy says it’s always the same once they learn the truth, that it was Jade the children were calling for. First, they blame him, then they hate him, and they will eventually kill him. He asks about Tabitha, and the boy says that for her it’s worse. Jade questions that if he dies every time, if that means there is no way home and asks how it helps and how he stops it. The boy just goes into Colony House and ignores him.

Kenny and Victor help Henry into bed. Kenny asks what Henry was talking about, so Victor gives him the drawing. He says the man in the yellow suit ate his mother and he never should have told him.

Jade follows his younger self into Colony House and to the basement. Boyd tries to talk about people murdering him, but he just follows the boy. There is a stack of furniture against the wall that the boy says he has to clear the way to see the path. Boyd helps him move it, and behind it is a door. He asks Boyd if he sees it, and he tells him he does.

Sophia pours Marielle a drink. Marielle tells Kristi that the radio came on and she heard them screaming, every single person who has ever died there. That's what it was like when she was in the chamber. All she could hear and feel was the suffering of every person who had ever died there. She kept telling herself it couldn’t be real, but when the radio came on it’s like all the pain and horror shot though her again. Sophia says she’s a prophet and that maybe God has chosen her to hear their suffering. Marielle says she can’t do this and starts to walk off, but Kristi stops her saying she’s seen that happen there before, the place getting in peoples heads. She tells Kristi that it is different. There is something old there, ancient, and it’s feeding off their suffering and doesn't stop. Even after they die, they are still trapped there and never get to leave. She runs off.

At the settlement Ellis, watching Ethan sleep, says that sometimes he forgets he’s just a kid, because he always seems so grown up. Tabitha says he’s always been like that and that Jim used to call him the Little Professor, because he was curious and full of questions. Donna tells them to try to get some sleep and all they have to do is hold onto the morning then they can get out of there and back to the nightmare they understand.

Suddenly they hear singing voices. Donna knows Tabitha is remembering something and she says she knows that sound. There’s a flashback as Tabitha she says that she remembers playing with smaller versions of them, and it was her signing. There was a man who was angry and took the dolls from her and said they gave him nightmares, so he threw them in the lake, but one day he died, and his nightmares came out of the lake. As a girl she screams, and Tabitha in the present says they aren't safe and have to leave; the talisman on the door won’t protect them from it. Roger asks how she knows that, but one suddenly comes crashing through the cabin, and Ellis tells them to run. It knocks Roger down. Ellis tries to help him, but it pushes him back. He runs out as it rips Roger’s jaw off and reaches down his throat.

They gather together, but don’t know where Patty is. Ellis goes after her. She’s hiding but it finds her and drags her to the fire and pushes her face into it. Ellis whacks it with a big stick and helps her get away. The doll is now on fire. Donna says they have to run, and one grabs her and starts choking her, but Tabitha stabs it with the totem, and it falls. Patty and Ellis reunite with them. Donna asks what just happened, and Tabitha says she remembered how to hurt them. The one on fire looks at them but then turns and leaves.

Jade tries the door and eventually opens it and goes into the root cellar. He sees spiders again. He yells for Boyd who appears to be gone again. Jade pushes on and goes into a hole that opens into the cave tunnels. He isn’t sure which way to go and calls again for Boyd who grabs him and tells him they have to go. Jade says it can’t be real. Boyd tells him Capricorn and that it’s real. Jade says they are just under Colony House, that the tunnels are that close, but Boyd says they have been walking through the creepy hallway for awhile. Boyd tries to get him to leave, saying he will drag him out if he has to. Jade goes to leave but then sees the young version of him and follows him. He comes to the chamber where the children were sacrificed. There are seven rocks in a circle with a big slab in the middle. He asks the boy how knowing this gets them home. They have already tried to save them so many times, is there something there they need? He asks him how to save them when they have already failed. The boy just walks off. The nightmare creatures come out. The Swing Coat Creature tells him he should have listened to Boyd, but he was never really the smart one. They all grab Jade and push him into the grave and hold him down, placing the rock slab over the grave as he screams. Suddenly one of the children appears and says “anghkooey.” Jade screams and wakes up. Boyd grabs him. He’s back in the sheriff’s office. He asks Boyd how they got there, and he tells him that they never left; he’s been sitting there for hours. He was at the window, then he sat down, and that’s it. Jade says there was more, a lot more. He tells Boyd that he knows where “they” are. He knows what they have to do to go home. He knows how they can save the children.
